Weekly Update

October 1, 2021

Dear St. Charles Families,

Students in Grades 1-8 attended Mass today. Grade 4 and Mrs. Cunningham did a beautiful job planning the celebration of the feast of St. Thérèse de Lisieux.

Thank you to Ms. Przytula and Grade 5! It was wonderful to have many families and faculty members attend the 10 am Mass last Sunday. It was especially wonderful to meet grandparents and extended family members of Grade 5. We encourage all families to attend Mass each weekend.

We are in need of parent help during morning drop-off from 8:10-8:30. If you are available to help, please email me the day(s) you are available. I will reply to your email.

St Charles School and Parish launched new websites. We kept the same domain, https://www.saintcharleswoburn.com. The parish site may be accessed at https://www.sccwoburn.org.  You may wish to check out our new design. We will be refreshing and updating information throughout the upcoming months.

Students do not have school on Friday, October 8, or Monday, October 11. October 8 is a professional day for staff and October 11 is a holiday.

On Wednesday, October 6, a family will be cashing in a 2019 SCS Gala Auction Prize, “A Ride to School in a Police Car.”  Please do not be alarmed when a police car arrives with lights and sirens during drop-off. Also, we have an ALICE drill on October 6 as well. We will not evacuate the buildings, though. We have already practiced that a few weeks ago. On Wednesday, we will use an example of a low-level threat and practice A-Alert, L-Lockdown, and I-inform during the drill..

Thank you to the many families who reached out to see if they could be of help this week when Mr. Killilea passed. His obituary was posted today and I have included it for you. I expect the wake and funeral to be large. Students will not attend the funeral, but if you wish for your student to attend the wake, you will have the information. I would recommend our younger students not attend the wake. Also, students should continue to wear their physical education uniforms to school on the day they have P.E. class.

William J. Killilea, of Melrose, passed away on September 29, 2021 at the age of 64. Bill was the husband of Rene Killilea of Stoneham. Loving father of Jessica Thibeau & her husband Shaun of Oceanside, CA; Billy Killilea, Jr., of Melrose; and Shannon Killilea of Stoneham. Proud grandfather of Carson and Leah. Brother of Robert P. Killilea & his wife Elaine of Peabody; Kevin M. Killilea & his wife Barbara of Greenfield, WI; Karen M. Killilea of Melrose; the late Peter M. Killilea; and the late Richard P. Killilea. Uncle of Kristina L. Hrapsky of Greenfield, WI. Visiting hours will be held on Tues., October 5, from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Wed., October 6, at St. Patrick’s Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org.

Thank you for your support of our September 24 TAG Day. We raised $241 for St. Vincent de Paul of Woburn.

Parents, please send an email to Mrs. Looby or call the school office at 781-935-4635 if your student is coming to school late, or if you are dismissing your student. We appreciate the phone calls for dismissals in advance.  Once you arrive to pick up your student, please call the office and Mrs. Looby will be sure your student walks to your vehicle safely. Please park along Myrtle Street for late arrivals or dismissals.

The St. Charles School Evening for Excellence Gala will be on Friday, October 29, at the Stoneham/Woburn Elks, which was renovated recently. Tickets are $40 per adult, $350 per table of six, and $25 for faculty and alumni under the age of 30.  We are in need of items for our Gala auction. Please feel free to email me about auction items. You may purchase tickets or register to be a sponsor at https://www.saintcharleswoburn.com/evening-excellence-fundraiser .

For the safety of all attendees, as well as their family members and students

who are too young to be vaccinated or are immunocompromised, we encourage

all attendees either to be vaccinated or have received a negative Covid test

before the event.  In this spirit, attendees will be asked to wear a mask inside the function room,

unless they are actively eating or drinking.  This policy is subject to change under state and federal

                guidelines or public health orders.

St. Vincent de Paul of Woburn is hosting a clothing drive on October 9 and 10. Please see the attached flyer for details. Please encourage your students to donate and learn first-hand about how to help others in our community.

The Woburn Fire Department is hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 16, from 10 am until 2 pm. The event will be held rain or shine! Please stop by the station located at 124 Main Street (Station 1) for refreshments, fun, games and a raffle.

If your child has a fever, please do not send them to school. Also, if your child has any of the following symptoms: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, a new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or a runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, please keep your child home.  If your child has been exposed to COVID-19, please contact our school nurse immediately.

Enjoy the weekend!
